MT-2 (Melanotan II) is a synthetic cyclic lactam analogue of alpha-MSH, engineered for enhanced receptor binding affinity and metabolic stability versus the linear native peptide. It is a broadly promiscuous melanocortin receptor agonist, acting on MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, and MC5R — covering skin pigmentation, energy homeostasis, sexual function signalling, and exocrine gland biology respectively.
MT-2 is one of the most studied melanocortin peptides in receptor pharmacology research. Its relative selectivity profiles across MCR subtypes, its cyclic lactam structure-activity relationships, and its downstream signalling via cAMP/PKA pathways make it a versatile research tool for melanocortin system biology. It remains widely used in preclinical CNS, metabolic, and dermatological research.
