Oxytocin (Cys-Tyr-Ile-Gln-Asn-Cys-Pro-Leu-Gly-NH₂; disulfide bridge Cys1–Cys6) is a nonapeptide hormone and neuropeptide produced in the paraventricular and supraoptic nuclei of the hypothalamus. It acts on OXTR (oxytocin receptor), a Gq-coupled GPCR expressed throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, smooth muscle, and immune tissue.
Research applications for oxytocin span neuroscience, endocrinology, and behavioural biology. Key research areas include social bonding and pair bond formation, maternal behaviour, stress axis regulation via the HPA axis, anxiolytic mechanisms, trust and social cognition, and gut motility.
